Capturing the Moment - Painting Alla Prima with Michelle Chrisman (Tuesday through Friday)

Fresh, intentional paint strokes will be the order of the day, rather than over- analyzed perfectionism. Alla Prima - translates from Italian meaning "at once." Painting directly from life, we will produce several small paintings per day. Emphasis will be on the simplification of shapes and shadow patterns. Each class will begin with a brief visual lecture and demo by the instructor followed by uninterrupted painting time during which students will work alla prima. We will have several defined exercises that will help students simplify their color story. Another helpful exercise will be limited strokes which helps the artist paint with bold, intentional strokes, producing fresh paintings as well as helping the artist avoid overworking and unnecessary detail. The results will be paintings with a beautiful contemporary look. We will paint from an arrangement of objects as well as working with a model. Some painting experience is helpful.
