Cynthia Rowland: Painting Multiple Figures in Oils(Tuesdays)

Two figures posed together will provide a unique opportunity to investigate both compositional and conceptual properties inherent in figure painting. We will explore the potential for storytelling and metaphor, the role of space and form as well as the artist's intent throughout the course. Students will be encouraged to capitalize on visual information that supports a personal narrative. Do conceptual needs drive painting decisions? While formal elements of anatomical structure, value, color, compositional devices and a vast array of oil painting techniques will form the basis of the instructional format, we will also discuss the relationship between these formal elements and the idea or concept in relation to the figure.
