Prior to the invention of paper, thoughts and numerals were transcribed onto wood, bone, clay and papyrus by tribal people, Sumerians and Egyptians. The invention of what we now call paper is said to have occurred around 300BC in southeast China.
These early efforts will be briefly illustrated.
A more thorough discussion will be given of “modern” techniques which, for example, began at the Fabriano Mill in 1276 AD. These methods and required equipment will be illustrated as Fred reviews the construction of his own paper-mill in 1981.
Finally, Fred will present his own efforts by way of painting, printmaking, calligraphy and bookmaking.
The New Mexico Art League's Works on Paper exhibit will be on view at the time of the lecture. Plan to come early to view the artwork before the lecture. The show includes 82 pieces by 53 New Mexico artists, and all works are for sale.

F. G. Yost was born and brought up in Connecticut and educated at the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn and Iowa State University. He was employed by Sandia National Laboratories for 28 years and retired in October of 1999 as a Distinguished Member of the Technical Staff. In early 2000 he began a second career, this time, as an artist. Because his mother was an artist, participation in art-related activities began very early. He has taken art courses from several institutions and attended many art workshops, including those from C.W. Mundy, Robert Liberace and Sherrie McGraw. He spends a significant amount of time painting and experimenting with various materials for sources of artistic inspiration and is an active member of the New Mexico Art League and the Rio Gande Art Association.
