This immersive 2-day workshop is designed for artists, hikers, and curious observers who want to slow down, look more closely, and discover how a sketchbook can transform the way they see the world. Both days will take place outdoors in the Pine Flats Recreation area near Tijeras, just 25 minutes east of Albuquerque. Each day we'll hike approximately 2.5 – 3 miles on easy to moderate trails, making frequent stops for guided sketchbook exercises and drawing prompts that encourage deeper observation and a richer connection to the landscape. Together we'll practice the art of “seeing”… noticing patterns, textures, light, shapes, and relationships that often go unnoticed when we're simply passing through. Rather than creating finished artwork, we'll use the sketchbook as a place to experiment, explore new techniques, and capture discoveries along the trail. Using a limited selection of art materials, you'll learn to be resourceful while allowing the natural environment to become both subject and inspiration. Whether you're an experienced artist or just beginning a sketchbook practice, you'll leave with fresh ways to observe, record, and engage with the world around you.

Please sign waiver and return it to the Art League before the workshop begins.

Mary Beth Woiccak’s work is inspired by the natural world: tangible and ethereal. The organic forms, shadows, and shapes that are innate on rocks and in landscapes are all part of the visual language she documents. Color, line, and the tactile nature of objects are explored consistently through Mary Beth’s body of work as a whole. In 2019, she moved to Albuquerque to be closer to the landscapes, hikes, and beauty of the Southwest. Mary Beth has combined her passions for hiking and art for many years, incorporating "outdoor studios" into her own creative practice. Come prepared to hike, sketch, experiment, and experience the landscape with fresh eyes.
