The classical indirect method makes it possible to paint realistic still life by separating all the different elements of creating into individual steps.  Drawing and composition, capturing correct value, and layering color are broken down separately so the painting evolves in a logical and easy to understand sequence.  Students will explore different methods to create a strong start in painting including Flemish and Venetian technique.  We will practice beginning a painting with an imprimatura, and open and closed grisaille.  Learning about color and the properties of different oil paints, whether transparent or opaque, while applying glazes, velaturas and scumbles will also be covered.  These techniques aid the artist in achieving realistic effects and a luminous depth that cannot be attained in direct painting.

Please sign up early; class size is limited.
