Painters view art history in a different way than traditional academics do, and having actual experience with the materials and the joy and terror of the next blank canvas potentially changes the way the historical information is perceived. Starting around the mid 1800’s up to today, this class will speed through the major art movements, ideas and motivations behind painting and what was and is making it new. After the invention and improvements to the art of photography, painting had to re-assess and was free to change course many times and re-invent itself. Although essentially primitive in it’s application, painting has proven to be flexible and inclusive enough a media to express a huge range of feeling and expression. A lot of information has been compressed into a relatively short 8-week class, but the core of Modernism and what happened after has been kept intact. For painters, art history is like family history, the good, the bad and the beautiful.

Please sign up early; class size is limited.
