Howard Wexler was born in New York and grew up in the Washington, D.C. area. While in Washington attended the Corcoran Art School (1950-52) ad the Abbott Academy of Art (1952-53). Howard received his BA in Fine Arts from Pratt Institute and later he attended the Academy Andre Lhote in Paris. While living in Paris he learned the oil painting techniques of the great masters, using their lost materials and methods as reconstituted by Jacques Maroger, former Director of the Louvre Laboratories, Paris. From 1958 to 1968, while living in Europe, Wexler exhibited in France, England and Germany -in Paris notably at the Pinacotheque des Pientres Modernes for seven years and at the Salon des Artistes Independants for four years. He also exhibited his paintings in the French provinces. Howard taught drawing and painting to the American colony in Paris and Normandy, France from 1961 to 1967 - and in Stuttgart, Germany from 1967 to 1968. In 1968 he moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico where, along with his colleague, Siegfried Hahn, he continued instructing students in their art academy. An in-depth article on their unique approach to drawing and painting appeared in American Artist Magazine (March, 1976). Siegfried Hahn and Howard Wexler acted as directors and instructors at the New Mexico Art League for several yeas in Albuquerque. Howard has exhibited extensively the United States. His landscapes, florals and still-life paintings are in collections throughout the nation.
Siegfried W. A. Hahn was born January 8, 1914 in Randfontein, Transvaal, South Africa. As an infant he contracted infantile paralysis and was bedridden for the first 6 years of life. His father constructed a portable drafting table for him, gave him crayons, pencils and paper, which started his career in art. After high school, he spent 2 years in the Architecture and Fine Arts Department of Johannesburg University. The following year he studied drawing and painting at Cape Town University Fine Arts Department. In 1935, Siegfried was accepted as a student at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in London. He studied there for 3 years and was awarded the Creswick Prize, the Landseer Bronze Medal and the Turner Gold Medal. In 1938, Siegfried entered the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. With the outbreak of the war in 1940, he returned to South Africa and taught drawing and painting at Stellenbosch Technical College. After the war, Siegfried returned to Europe and spent 9 years traveling, painting and exhibiting his art. For 12 years, from 1955 until 1967, Siegfried lived in Paris and Evreux, France exhibiting and teaching art. He learned from Jacques Maroger, the methods, techniques and mediums of the great masters, which had been lost for two centuries. Some of his students were families of American military stationed at Exreux. He was encouraged by his students and their families to move to Albuquerque, New Mexico with his partner Howard Wexler in 1968. Siegfried taught art at the Art Center, the New Mexico Art League and at his home studio. He and Howard planted vintage roses in their large home garden, which received local and national attention. Siegfried passed away in 2008 and was honored with a memorial garden in front of the New Mexico Art League.
